Abstract: This dissertation draws upon feminist theory to discuss notions of form, matter, materiality and ‘gift giving’ within architectural practice. Connections between matter and mater (mother) are investigated through discussion of work by Sarah Wigglesworth Architects, MUF Art/ Architecture and Tactility Factory. Case studies are interwoven with a narrative of domestic sewing practice by the author’s mother, a practice of gift giving from everyday life, tying together discussions of theory and practice.
