In this short interview Nishat Awan gives her testimonial about the feminist pedagogy at SSoA, the approach at the time she was studying there, her memories and the legacy it had in her teaching. In addition, she also talks about the challenging aspects of the feminist approach in architectural pedagogy.
Dr Nishat Awan is a Senior Lecturer at Goldsmiths University of London, based at the Centre for Research Architecture. Before joining Goldsmiths, she led the MA in Architectural Design at University of Sheffield where most of her teaching was at postgraduate level. She undertook her architectural studies at Sheffield School of Architecture, finishing her PhD in 2011, titled Diasporic urbanism: concepts, agencies & ‘mapping otherwise’, which explores the difficulties of operating with diasporic space and of accommodating the material complexities of migrant lives. Awan’s research interests are related to questions of diversity, migration and geo-politics and how these can be addressed through spatial practice, including questions of post-coloniality, diasporas and border practices. She is particularly interested in modes of visual representation and forms of engagement that allow an ethical engagement with places at a distance.
