Title: Feminine tactics in architecture

Author: Kim Trogal

Year: 2003

Abstract: This thesis introduces the notion of ‘feminine’ tactics to explore the possibilities for change in everyday architectural practice. Here the ‘feminine’ is taken as a strategic feminist concept, to explore the politics of sexual difference; new forms of creativity and the question of the ‘other’ in architectural and spatial practices. The ‘feminine’ as a tactic in architecture here, followe Helen Cixous’ notions of écriture féminine and économie féminine, in that it aims to create to create alternative symbolic systems. These ‘alternatives’ are ones that are sensitive to difference and our relationships to others within the ‘space’ of practice.  Following Lefebvre, the thesis explores ‘moments’, a spatial-temporal realisation of the feminine, in instances of everyday life practices.
