{"id":1331,"date":"2020-08-03T22:27:48","date_gmt":"2020-08-03T21:27:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/feministssoa.group.shef.ac.uk\/?p=1331"},"modified":"2025-06-15T22:41:50","modified_gmt":"2025-06-15T21:41:50","slug":"teach-out-the-perils-of-tradition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/feminist.ssoa.info\/?p=1331","title":{"rendered":"Teach Out: The Perils of Tradition"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"SSoA Feminist Library_The Perils of Tradition MatriArch\" width=\"940\" height=\"529\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/p-7uMSdYhd8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\">This is a slightly amended version of a piece performed on 5<sup style=\"user-select: auto;\">th<\/sup> March 2020 at \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/feminist.ssoa.info\/?p=1299\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong style=\"user-select: auto;\">The Feminist School of Architecture Teach Out<\/strong><\/a>\u2019 at Foodhall, Sheffield by <strong style=\"user-select: auto;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/feminist.ssoa.info\/?p=1026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MatriArch<\/a> (Alice Grant and Rosa Turner Wood<\/strong>). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:62px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\"><strong><em>The Perils of Tradition Transcript<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\">R: The first thing we thought about this event, is why is there not a question mark on the end of the title.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\">A: Does the lived experience of students and staff match with the academia that is happening within the school?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\">R: Is it a feminist school of architecture?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\">A: Probably not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\">R: Yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\">A: So where do we start?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\">R: Let\u2019s begin with the pub after reviews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\">A: Did you see that tutor drinking with students?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\">R: Yeah, he said he\u2019d put me in touch with that Clerkenwell practice. Yeah yknow? His friend from undergraduate, they used to be drinking buddies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\">A: But what if you don\u2019t drink?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\">R: What if you can\u2019t drink?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\">A: What if you have to work the next day?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\">R: Don\u2019t worry, just less opportunities really.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\">A: But Architecture school is about making connections!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\">R: But should these connections be made over alcohol?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\">A: Where the loudest voices get heard?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\">R: But we benefit from this!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\">A: Yeah that true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\">R: Aren\u2019t you working on his house over summer?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\">A: Yeah, but only because he asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\"><strong>R: So shall we tell them what matri arch is?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\"><strong>A: we are a student led feminist collective<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\"><strong>R: who facilitate discussions on education and practice<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\"><strong>A: with the aim to share more female and non-binary voices.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\"><strong>R: So why does matri arch exist?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\">A: Because a tutor at my undergraduate once asked me where is Kate, she has a tutorial? Is she on her period or something?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\">R: Because when working with a feminist agenda I don\u2019t want people to look sheepish and pass me on to a female tutor<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\">A: Because my tutor said my model was sooooo cute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\">R: But it was cute!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\">A: Yeahn that\u2019s true it was really cute<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\">Because tutors are mentioning my learning difficulty in their feedback as though I will never be on a level playing field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\">R: Because we want floor 14 feminism to meet floor 16 feminism<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\">A: Because we want better representation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\">R: Because we are bored of the perils of tradition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\"><strong>A: So how do we deal with these perils of tradition?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\">R: Can we please just stop inviting the same old guest reviewers to the school just because they\u2019re Sheffield Alumni?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\">A: Do they hold our school\u2019s feminist values?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\">R: Let\u2019s stop accepting money for the catalogue from practices that exploit their parts 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\">A: can we at least try to do better to guide our students towards practices that treat staff with respect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\">R: Pay them living wage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\">A: Make them go home at 5.30.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\">R: But isn\u2019t it a rite of passage to suffer through architecture school? I mean, my old practice bought be dinner and an uber if I stayed till 11pm, that\u2019s not too bad right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\">A: Rosa, you\u2019re scared of confrontation, and you never want to move back to London. Don\u2019t romanticise the suffering, and apologising for shitty directors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\">R: While we\u2019re at it Let\u2019s stop making architecture for architects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\">A: Though It might look good on Instagram<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\">R: No one cares about the shadow gap if there is not an accessible toilet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\">A: Or the women\u2019s line wraps round the block.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\">R: Or there isn\u2019t baby changing facility in the men\u2019s toilets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\">A: If you\u2019re practice doesn\u2019t accommodate equal maternity and paternity leave,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\">R: Is it really feminist?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\">A: If you\u2019re practice expects unpaid overtime, is it really feminist?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\">R: If your architecture school cultivates competition and anxiety, is it really feminist?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\">A: and isn\u2019t this why these UCU strikes are important<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\">R: We need better representation in the university<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\">because we should value quality of education above anything else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\">A: That\u2019s why the strike is important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\">R: Because some people don\u2019t have the ability to strike right now<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\">A: and that is why the strike is important<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\">R: Sheffield School of architecture is striving to make change, and that is great.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\">A: But what if they don\u2019t get it right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\">R: That\u2019s ok, as long as they learn from it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\">A: As long as they stay open to criticism and try again.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\">R: And we say this all with love<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\">A: Because I have never felt more relentlessly supported by educators<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\">R: Because at Sheffield mental health is prioritised over your knowledge of Revit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\">A: Because the school has supported us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\">                                                                                                &#8211; despite all of our criticisms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-background has-sm-dark-primary-background-color has-sm-dark-primary-color is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:79px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Event, 2020.
